In November, 1941 Ruth Glasberg, age 11 years, along with her family, and 2,000 other Jews were rounded up by Romanian gendarmes, herded towards the train station, and loaded, 50 to 80 per car, into cattle cars.
Ruth Glasberg Gold cites: "During the next four days of this horrifying journey, some deportees died of suffocation, hunger and thirst. On the fourth day the train stopped and soldiers unbolted the doors. Starving, exhausted and filthy we could barely walk. We were ordered to form a column and were led on a death march through the vast, muddy fields of Transnistria. We were forced to walk about 25 KM a day, and only at night would our escorts allow us to rest, usually in abandoned barns that we shared with corpses of those who were unable to continue. The Romanian soldiers deliberately took us on detours for 2 long weeks to exhaust and further demoralize us. The old, the infirm and children, who could not keep pace, were left along the roadside."

Ruth Glasberg Gold cites: "My family and I ended up in a camp called Bershad. It was one of the largest and most infamous camps in Transnistria. We found shelter in a small room of a partially demolished house with a dirt floor, without doors or windows. In Bershad there was no electricity, running water or even outhouses. We had to share this room with about 20 other deportees. There I became a helpless witness to the agonizing deaths of my roommates my family included. In three short weeks I lost my father, then my 18-year-old brother and finally my mother."

He transmited a call for help, which was received by Mossad leAliyah Bet, which contacted the Royal Navy.

Shlomo Reichman's father wrapped him in a blanket and yelled to people who had already jumped onto the rocks, to catch him as he threw him onto the rocks.

Her first attempt was unsuccessful, but in her second attempt she succeeded in retrieving the blanket – still unaware that I – a newborn – was inside. Shlomo's uncle, age 14 years at the time, recognized him, and his mother was found on another part of the island.

An RAF reconnaissance aircraft from Cyprus Κύπρος alerted by radio, was tasked to sweep the area and drop emergency supplies.

On December 8, 1946, 22:40PM, HMS Providence received a signal from the Commander-in- Chief Mediterranean, ordering her to raise steam and proceed, without further orders and at best speed, to Syrna Σύρνα Island at 36°20'N 26°40'E.
At 23:30PM, she cleared Haifa.

At dawn, December 11,1946, HMS Providence arrived at Souda Σούδα, and transferred 256 survivor, to a LST (Tank Landing Ship).

The survivors were then transhipped to the detention camps on Cyprus Κύπρος, and finally released in 1948.

As the tired crews landed their planes here (Aqir, Palestine) after their hazardous mercy flight, a fourth Halifax climbed away over the sea with more relief supplies, and the destroyer Chevron and the minesweeper Providence set out from Haifa to make a 'combined operation' rescue attempt."
Ninian Stewart cites "With Providence pitching and rolling heavily, each survivor had to be secured by a line and hauled onboard, and the women, clinging to their bundles, showed considerable pluck and fortitude.However, when her whaler first brought survivors alongside they panicked, became out of control, rushed to get aboard the 'sweeper' and capsized the boat, leaving two crew, sixmen and seven women in the water."

Shlomo Reichman and his uncle were taken by a Greek ship to Alexandria,and the British didn't catch them.
Four months later, they arrived in Haifa, and were transferred to Atlit internment camp.

Ruth Blasberg cites: in April, 1947, 'Four months after the shipwreck, the British granted permission for women and children survivors of the Rafiach to emigrate to Palestine ahead of the others."
But, "the general meeting voted that we should stay and that some twenty-seven members of Groups I and II should go first."
"The lucky twenty-seven pioneers left Cyprus and were later assigned by our party in Palestine to live on Kibbutz Usha for one year of training in preparation for the establishment of our own kibbutz."

Rafael 'Rafi' Tadmor cites: "We fought disembarking in Cyprus, but the British used gas bombs so we had to get off there. I was in Cyprus for nearly two months."

Ruth Glasberg joined a new kibbuts, and served first as a kibbutz medic.

Ruth Glasberg graduated as a Hadassah registered nurse.

Ruth Glasberg Gold was founder of the first support group for child survivors of the Holocaust in Florida.
