In 1908, Cernăuţi Chernivtsi was the site of the first Yiddish language conference, coordinated by Nathan Birnbaum.

In August 1941, Ion Antonescu ordered creation of a ghetto in Cernăuţi Chernivtsi. 50,000 Bukovina Jews were crammed into the ghetto.

In October, 1941, two thirds of the Jews in the Cernăuţi Chernivtsi Ghetto were deported to Transnistria,
In early 1942, the rest were deported to Transnistria, where most perished.
