Dov Friedberg was smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto, but was soon captured by the Germans and imprisoned in Sobibor Extermination Camp.

In January 1941, Dov Frieberg's family was relocated to the Turbin Ghetto, near Lublin, where they remained until May, 1942.

Dov Freiberg spent seventeen-month in the Sobibor Extermination Camp.
Dov Freiberg cites: "I had actually wanted to go to Lublin, as I still held hope that I might get from there to Warsaw, but now I understood why it was a good thing we weren’t going there: because in Lublin there was a concentration camp called Maidanek, and people had told tales of terrible things happening there."

On October 14, 1943, Dov Freiberg, together with over 350 inmates, escaped Sobibor Extermination Camp and fled to the forests, where he hid for ten months.
In July, 1944, he was liberated by the Russian Army, and made his way back to Poland.

He was not the kind of clap-you-on-the-back hero. He was a man of manners, the type who didn't raise his voice. He was a man of conscience and a daring fighter.”
He rose to fame after the release of the 1960 Otto Preminger film Exodus, based on the Leon Uris novel of the same name, in which Paul Newman portrayed him.

[...] We were educated to be able to live in Erez Israel, Aliya Beth, love of country. At this time, as I left the camp I no longer wanted to be a Jew. After the holocaust. [...]"
"We came to a camp near Marseille. [...] We arrived in France at night, and were roughly two days there before we were brought aboard the ship, again at night."

Despite his love for her, they parted ways because she was a Zionist and dreamed of going to Palestine, while he planned to go to America.
