The Jewish community in Satu Mare traces its origins to 1623, when the prince of Transylvania, Gabriel Bethlen, brought Jews there and permitted them to settle in the city.

In 1842, the first Jewish community organization was established, in Satu Mare.
In 1858, the first synagogue was built in the city.
In 1893, on the site of the first synagogue, the Decebal Street Synagogue was built.

In 1944, the Jewish population of Satu Mare was deported to the territory of the III Reich as a part of the Holocaust.
On May 19, 1944, six trains left for Auschwitz-Birkenau carrying approximately 3300 persons.
In total, 18,863 Jews were deported from Satu Mare and among them 14,440 Jews were killed.
The survivors who returned mainly emigrated to Israel.
