Under Joseph Stalin, Kolyma Колыма́ became the most notorious region for the Gulag camps.
Between 1932 and 1954, more than a million people may have died en route to the region, or in Kolyma Колыма́'s gold mining, road building, lumbering, and construction camps.

In 1946, the number of prisoner in Kolyma Колыма́ was increased by the thousands of former Soviet POWs liberated by Allied forces or the Red Army at the close of World War II.
