Narrative
In 1881, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion was formed in 1881 by the amalgamation of the 91st Princess Louise's Argyllshire Regiment and the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders Regiment.
Narrative
On October 26, 1945, the 5th Battalion embarked at Liverpool in SS Ascania, which sailed at 1 p.m. the following day.
Narrative
On November 6, 1945, SS Ascania berthed at Haifa, and the 5th Battalion was accommodated in Camp 21, 35 miles from Haifa and 6 miles from Tulkarm, in a tented camp, except for offices and messes, who were barracked in brick buildings.
The 5th Battalion in Palestine consisted of 56 officers and 938 other ranks, a total of 994 all ranks.
The 5th Battalion was joined in Camp 21, by the 6th Air Landing Brigade, commanded by Brigadier R. H. Bellamy, DSO, and two other battalions: 2 Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and 1 R.U.R.
On November 12, 1945, Major-General E. L. Bols, CB, DSO, visited Camp 21, and welcomed the Battalion to the Airborne Division.
