In 1256, Lviv was founded by King Danylo Halytskyi of the Ruthenian principality of Halych-Volhynia, and named after of his son, Lev.

In the first half of the 17th century, Jewish craftsmen founded their own guilds in Krakow, Lvov Львів and Przemysl.

In June 1941, during the initial stage of Operation Barbarossa, the Germans captured Lviv Львів.
Ukrainian nationalists, organized as a militia, and the civilian population were allowed to take revenge on the '"Jews and the Bolsheviks' and icommited several mass killings in Lviv Львів and the surrounding region, resulting in an estimated 4,000 and 10,000 deaths.
Galician Jews became the main target of German repressions according to the Third Reich's racial policies.
Almost all of the Jewish Galicians were deported to concentration camps or killed.
In 1941 there were approximately 200,000 Jews in Lviv Львів.
By the end of the war the Jewish population was virtually wiped out, with only 200 to 300 Jews left alive.
