Before the Second World War, Baia Mare had a community of more than 1,000 Jews, out of which only around 130 still live in the city, the rest perished during deportation or were exterminated in the camps.

In 1693, the prohibition, issued in 1693, against Jewish settlement in Hungarian mining towns, was abolished.
Baia Mare had a synagogue dating from 1885.

On May 3, 1944, the roundup of the Jews of Baia Mare, together with those from Northern Transylvania, began.
The ghettos of Baia Mare were established on the grounds of the Koenig Glass Factory, and in a stable and barn in Valea Burcutului.
On May 31, 1944, and June 5, 1944, two transports carried the 5,917 Jews of the Baia Mare ghettos to Auschwitz.
