Navahrudak Nowogrodek was the chief town of the vovooidship.
The Court of Appeals was in Wilno.
The seat of the Justice of the Peace was in Nowogrodek.

Navahrudak was the birthplace of the Mussar movement, as well as the hometown of Yiddish lexicograph, Alexander Harkavy.

On July 4, 1941 Nazi Germany occupied Navahrudak, following one the tragic event of the the Novogrudok Cauldron when the Red Army was surrounded.

During a series of Aktions, the Germans murdered all but 550 of the approximately 10,000 Jews of Navahrudak.
Those Jews who were not killed were sent into slave labor.
Partisan resistance, including the Bielski partisans, made of Jewish volunteers, operated in the region.
