In 1678, three independent troops of Scots Dragoons were raised, and 3 years later, by Royal Warrant, these troops were regimented to form The Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons, and later numbered the 4th Dragoons.
The original Scots Dragoons uniform called for the troopers to wear grey coats, although no record seems to exist that the regimental mounts be of any particular colour, until 1693, when inspected in London by King William III, people took note that the regiment was mounted on all grey horses.
