Narrative
Ephraim אפרים, means Fruitful, in Hebrew.
Ephraim was the second son of Joseph and Asenath, the founder of the Israelite Tribe of Ephraim and heir of the Abrahamic Covenant (Chronicles 5:1-2).
Jacob gave Ephraim precedence over Manasseh, the elder brother, and since Jacob is regarded as being sufficiently just, God upheld the blessing in his honour, and made Ephraim the leading tribe.
The Tribe of Ephraim, together with Menasseh, formed the House of Joseph.
Ephraim was a member of the Northern Kingdom until the kingdom was conquered by Assyria in 723 BC and the population deported.
From that time, the Tribe of Ephraim has been counted as one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.
In the New Testament the descendants of Ephraim are referred to as Samaritans John 4 because Ephraim's capital city was Samaria 2 Kings 16:29.
