The costumes were based on Egyptian and Greek historical dress. I interpreted the witches as Dido's poltical oponents & priestesses, working with snakes like the minoans. (Besides I promised the singer she would not be an Ugly witch again). The prince is dressed in scruffy black leather because, after all, he is a refuge from the fall of Troy after many years of war.
