Freiburg was strategically located at a junction of trade routes between the Mediterranean Sea and the North Sea areas, and the Rhine and Danube rivers.

On October 22, 1940, Gauleiter of Baden ordered the deportation of all Baden's Jews, as a reult, 350 Jewish citizens of Freiburg were deported to the southern French internment camp of Camp Gurs in the Basses-Pyrénées. They remained there until July 18, 1942, when the majority of the survivors were sent to Auschwitz.
The cemetery for German Jews who died at Camp Gurs is maintained by the town of Freiburg and other cities of Baden, and aA memorial was erected outside the town synagogue.
In addition, the pavements of Freiburg carry brass plates outside former residences as memorials to individual victims, including that of Edith Stein.
