Narrative

Galicia is a historical region in East Central Europe, named after Ukraіniаn city of Halych.
Galicia is now divided between Poland and Ukraine (most of Galicia is in Ukraine, while a small minor part in Poland).
Halychyna (Galicia) is derived from Greek word hals, meaning salt.
The name Galic derives from Ukrainian word "halka" meaning "crow", explaining the crow on coat of arms.

Narrative

The Greeks and Byzantines had strong influence, the Greeks started the conversion of Galicia and Kyivan Rus to Greek Orthodoxy.
Halych was rich in salt, which was actively mined and exported.
During the early medieval period, salt was the main export product from Halych.

 

Narrative

In Ukrainian history, the area was very referred as Red Rus' (Chervona Rus) or Red Ruthenia.
