SS Finland

Narrative

SS Finland was an American-flagged ocean liner for the Red Star Line.
In 1902 SS Finland was laid down.
On June 21, 1902, SS Finland was launched by W. Cramp and Son, Philadelphia, for the Red Star Line of International Mercantile Marine (IMM).
She was the sister ship to SS Kroonland.
She had two funnels and four masts
Length: 560 feet (170.7 meters)
Beam: 60.2 feet (18.3 m)
Engine: three-cylinder, triple expansion steam engines; twin screw propellors
Speed: 15 knots (28 km/h)

Narrative

On October 4 1902, SS Finland sailed on her maiden voyage from New York to Antwerpen.
In November 1907, as she neared Antwerpen, a gale in the English Channel almost drove her ashore, except for the assistance of two tugs, that kept her from running aground on the breakwater at Dover.
By January, 1909, SS Finland was reflagged under the Belgian flag, but remained on the New YorkAntwerpen route.
In March, 1909, she was chartered to the White Star Line, another IMM subsidiary, for three round-trip voyages between Napoli and New York.
In January, 1912, returning to the Red Star Line's New YorkAntwerpen service, SS Finland was reflagged, sailing under the American flag again.

Narrative

By early May, 1915, SS Finland and sister ship, SS Kroonland, were chartered to the International Mercantile Marine IMM subsidiary, Panama Pacific Line, for New York to San Francisco service via the Panama Canal.
