SS Imperator

Narrative

SS Imperator was an ocean liner built for the Hamburg Amerikanische Packetfahrt Actien Gesellschaft (HAPAG).
In 1910, she was laid down at the AEG Vulcan Shipyards, Hamburg.
On May 23, 1913, she was launched. the largest passenger ship in the world superseding the RMS Olympic.
In June, 1913, she was launched.
Maiden voyage: 20 June 1913, Cuxhaven to New York
Capacity: 51,680 gross tons
Length: 906 feet (276 meters)
Propulsion: 4 steam turbines AEG-Vulcan / Parsons direct drive on four shafts , i.e. one HP and one IP turbine each to an innershaft and two LP turbines each to an outer shaft , total of 60,000 shaft; Steam generated at 265 psi by 46 watertube boilers of Vulcan Yarrow design, originally coal burning, later converted to oil fired.

After World War I, she was briefly commissioned into the United States Navy as USS Imperator (ID-4080) and employed for returning American troops from Europe.

USS Imperator was handed over to Britain's Cunard Line as part of war reparations, and she sailed as the flagship RMS Berengaria
